Category 6/Data

Standards for Category 6 100 ohm twisted-pair is still under review. Recent developments include work started on the Category 6 cabling specification, and many debates on the issue of a hight-temperature environment for Cat 6 cabling.

Category 5E/Data

Category 5e 100 ohm twisted-pair copper cable that meets or exceeds specifications in ANSI/TIA/EIA-568-A-5, Commercial Building Telecommunications Cabling Standard, and ISO/IEC 11801, Generic Cabling for Customer Premises, for transmissions up to 100 MHz. The near-end crosstalk loss and return loss requirements are more severe than those of Category 5. Publication for Category 6 is currently pending.

Category 3/Voice

Category 3 100 ohm twisted-pair copper cable that meets or exceeds specifications in ANSI/TIA/EIA-568-A, Commercial Building Telecommunications Cabling Standard, and ISO/IEC 11801, Generic Cabling for Customer Premises, for transmissions up to 16 MHz.

Singlemode Fiber

Singlemode optical fiber is an optical fiber, usually step-index grade, that supports only one mode of light propagation. This does not necessarily imply single-wavelength operation. The light source is normally a laser.

Multimode Fiber

Multimode optical fiber A graded-index or step-index optical fiber that supports the propagation of more than one bound mode.

RG6/11 Coax

RG6/11 is an inexpensive, quarter-inch diameter unbalanced coaxial cable consisting of a central metallic core surrounded by a layer of insulating material. This insulating (dielectric) material may be a solid material or air spaced. The entire assembly is covered with a metallic mesh or solid metallic sleeve and protected by an outer layer of non-conducting material (cable jacket). RG6 is typically used in cable tv or sattelite applications. RG11 is the cable type used with thicknet (short for thick ethernet) cabling.
